Inverse Laplacian and the Heat Kernel

The heat kernel, also known as the RBF kernel, provides a similarity metric between all pairs of points in a given dataset. It is motivated as a measurement of the degree to which heat at one point will diffuse to another.

From the perspective of PDEs, the heat kernel is a Green's Function of the heat differential operator, so we may identify it with a pseudoinverse. Because the heat PDE is governed by the Laplacian, the heat kernel is the pseudoinverse of the Laplacian. Taking a low rank approximation of the heat kernel amounts to preserving the bottom eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrix.

In this notebook, we visualize a graph Laplacian and its pseudoinverse.
